Term 3 marked the launch of Rikkyo School’s new 6-week Pre-University Immersion Programme, which ran from Monday, 13th January to Friday, 21st February.

Designed to support the transition from high school to university, the programme provided a small group of High School 3 students with an invaluable opportunity to develop essential academic, research, personal, and life skills. By combining classroom learning with excursions and interactive workshops, the programme
aimed to create a holistic and engaging learning experience.

We were also joined by a visiting student from Koran High School, Tokyo, who contributed to discussions and activities, further enriching the group dynamic.

The course was structured around themed focuses during the first four weeks:

 Week 1: Natural Sciences
 Week 2: British Literature
Week 3: The Legal and Justice System
 Week 4: Creativity and Innovation

Throughout these weeks, students were encouraged to deeply engage with the subject matter, immersing themselves in an English-speaking environment while
making meaningful connections between theoretical knowledge and real-world applications.

The programme featured a variety of enriching experiences, including a seminar on Human Rights delivered by David Walbank KC, where students explored real-life
cases where these rights were not upheld. In literature, students attended a production of Bram Stoker’s 'Dracula' in Worthing, enhancing their understanding of British literary traditions. Two research workshops at the British Library allowed students to develop their academic inquiry skills while exploring exhibitions on the Windrush Generation and the Silk Road. Additionally, Melanie Brown, the school’s lead first-aider, led two First Aid sessions, equipping students with crucial life-saving skills and hands on experience using a portable defibrillator. The programme also incorporated various cooking activities, culminating in an engaging Come Dine with Me event that fostered teamwork, budget awareness and creativity.

In the final two weeks, students undertook independent research projects on topics of personal interest. With teacher guidance, they refined their research questions, explored data collection methods, and presented their findings in diverse formats, including laboratory demonstrations, multimedia productions, and slideshow presentations.

The students demonstrated exceptional motivation, enthusiasm, and curiosity throughout the programme. Friendships deepened, and English became the natural
medium of expression and engagement. As these students prepare for their university studies, we wish them the very best and thank them for their dedication
and active participation in this inaugural programme.
